The Art Nouveau Muse — Antique Belt Buckle Necklace One-of-a-Kind

A forgotten piece of history, given another century to be worn.
This remarkable necklace began as an antique Art Nouveau belt buckle, dating to approximately the late 19th to early 20th century. I discovered her tucked away on the bottom shelf of a local antique mall, heavily covered in verdigris, oxidation and more than a century of accumulated wear.
Rather than erase her age, I carefully restored the piece while preserving the character that makes her so special. Layers of verdigris and corrosion were removed, followed by careful buffing and polishing to reveal the beautiful flowing Art Nouveau metalwork and dimensional female portrait at the center.
She is not flawless—and she isn’t supposed to be.
Areas of patina, discoloration, surface wear and other evidence of her 100+ year history remain, giving the piece a beautifully perfectly imperfect finish.
To transform the buckle into a wearable necklace, I wanted to make as few permanent alterations as possible. The original buckle portion was carefully flattened, and the necklace chain was attached using the buckle’s existing hinge points. No holes were drilled and the decorative front was not soldered or permanently altered.
The result is a dramatic, one-of-a-kind statement necklace that allows an extraordinary piece of Art Nouveau design to be worn and appreciated again rather than hidden away.
